David is a professional guitar instructor, so when he’s not practicing, he’s teaching! On Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday he teaches privately in East Amherst, NY. On Thursday he teaches at the Guitar Factory in West Seneca, NY.
David has taught students of all ages. “I literally have taught from ages 5 up to 75,” says David, “and they have been people of all different walks of life and skill levels, from beginner to advanced.”
Here is an outline of David’s curriculum:
Student curriculum, Materials list, and Practice schedule:
Beginning
students will start with the Hal Leonard Guitar method book 1..(approx.
$6) These students are expected to practice 5 days a week for 15
minuets to a ½ hour.
Intermediate Students may also start with Hal Leonard 1,
depending on their reading level, and then move on to the Berklee
series "A Modern Method for Guitar 1" ,,(approx. $13) as well as a
packet of materials put together by myself that involves scales,
arpeggios, and soloing. (Price charged will cover my cost.)
These students are expected to practice 5 days a week for ½ an hour to an hour.
Advanced
students will start with the Berklee series "A Modern Method for Guitar
1", as well as my packet of materials, which will cover the key of C
(modes, chords, arpeggios, and soloing applications), soloing through
rock and jazz standards, music theory and speed techniques.
These students are expected to practice 6 days a week for 1-3 hours.
All
students must come prepared with picks, an extra set of strings, and a
non-perforated notebook. Also, for practice/use at home, these items
must be purchased: a tuner, and a metronome, each approx. $15, as well
as a peg winder, approx. $4 (normal), or $15 (with string cutter). I
will try to keep copies of the books and some supplies on hand; you can
purchase them from me for your convenience.
“Every musician should teach, because the teacher learns at least as much as the student does from the process, and often more. Before I started teaching I was really comfortable and familiar with the guitar. Now I know the guitar”.
“My philosophy with teaching comes from the old adage ‘Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for life.’ I try my hardest not to make students dependant on me. I encourage them to pull answers out of themselves so that they will be able to access that information again when I‘m not there. My ultimate goal with each student is to get them to the point where they don’t need me, essentially working myself out of a job.”
